Williams header denies Rams

Ashley Williams scored a late header for Swansea to deny Derby their first away league win in 18 months.

Pearson scores for Rams before Williams replies

Ashley Williams scored a late header for Swansea to deny Derby their first away league win in 18 months. Stephen Pearson had put the Rams ahead on 63 minutes at the Liberty Stadium but Williams replied 14 minutes from time to condemn the visitors to their 25th away league match without a victory. Ferrie Bodde shone for Swansea during a tight first half but the Dutchman - a reported Derby target - was unable to give his side the advantage. Like the rest of his team, he was restricted to long-range efforts as both sides failed to create many clear-cut chances. The hosts started the strongest, with the first real opportunity falling to Mark Gower in the eighth minute but he blasted his shot against Derby defender Jordan Stewart. The Rams' first attempt at goal came three minutes later but Nacer Barazite's speculative 25-yard strike flew wide of the target. Swansea livewire Bodde then saw a long-range effort fly over the crossbar in the 21st minute before Thomas Butler forced Derby goalkeeper Roy Carroll into his first save of the match moments later.

Best chance

Emanuel Villa blew Derby's best chance of the opening 45 minutes when he fired wide from six yards on 24 minutes. Swansea began the second half the brightest but Derby gave them a scare on 57 minutes, when Miles Addison drilled in a right-footed effort from 25 yards. The shot was tipped over the crossbar by Swansea stopper Dorus De Vries and the Swans came closest to opening their account after 62 minutes when Gower drove against the post from the left-hand edge of the penalty area. Gorka Pintado was quickly on to the rebound but Carroll was equal to his efforts and then Derby produced some pressure of their own and got their reward. Pearson was picked out by a Nathan Ellington ball from the left and the Scot coolly fired home from 12 yards. Another Bodde blast flew over the bar as the Swans instantly began their search for an equaliser.
Laid siege
The home side laid siege to the Rams goal with Butler shooting wide on 70 minutes and Pintado heading just over from six yards three minutes later. But Swansea's efforts paid off on 75 minutes when Williams rose highest to head substitute Jordi Gomes' in-swinging corner into the net. The Welsh team turned up the pressure and Carroll was forced to deal with another close-range Pintado effort with four minutes left. Steve Davies drilled a 20-yard effort wide for the Rams a minute into stoppage time. But with the home side on top in the closing stages, the Rams will be happy to leave Wales with a point.
