Rampant Port Vale stormed into the play-off places by inflicting a 2-1 defeat on Notts County, their first loss since Steve Cotterill took charge 15 games ago.
Micky Adams' team were the hungrier side from the off and were good value for Marc Richards' 22nd goal of the season in the 20th minute.
The County defence allowed Richards to turn unchallenged and they paid the price when his shot was deflected past Kasper Schmeichel.
County hit back just five minutes later when the unmarked Graeme Lee buried a 10-yard header after Craig Westcarr hooked over an inviting cross from the right.
But it took Vale only five more minutes to regain their advantage as Kris Taylor's intended cross sailed past a clutch of players and Schmeichel to find the far corner of the net.
Vale should have taken a firm grip six minutes after the interval when Schmeichel spread himself to save from Richards after the marksman raced clear from Adam Yates' pass.
County, who were outplayed and outfought for most of the contest, did build up a head of steam in the final quarter of the game.
But Vale substitute Rob Taylor rattled a post five minutes from time and Adams merited the three points.
