Ipswich cruise to victory at Home Park

Owen Garvan bagged a brilliant brace with Kevin Lisbie also on target as Ipswich defeated Plymouth at Home Park. Lisbie set up Garvan for the opener with a crisp effort from the edge of the box before he rifled home another unstoppable drive. The Tractor Boys made sure of the points when Lisbie reacted quickly to tap home from close range at the start of the second half. Argyle, who had won their three previous matches at Home Park, failed to impose themselves on the match with tall striker Rory Fallon their only real threat going forward, although they did manage a late consolation through Craig Cathcart's header. David Norris dampened the visitors' celebrates late on as he was dismissed for a second yellow card. Paul Sturrock was forced to change his Plymouth side for the first time in seven matches as Mat Doumbe failed to recover in time from a foot injury picked up during the 1-0 win over Preston. David McNamee replace him at full-back. Ipswich manager Jim Magilton made two changes to the team that drew 1-1 with Nottingham Forest on Tuesday with former Argyle man Norris and Lisbie coming in for Pablo Counago and Tommy Miller. The visitors almost got off to the perfect start as Jonathan Walters found himself one on one with Plymouth goalkeeper Romain Larrieu but, as was the case at the City Ground, the woodwork denied the striker as his shot rebounded off the foot of the post.

Quality

At the other end Fallon was looking a constant threat and it was from his low cross that strike partner Paul Gallagher wasted a golden opportunity to put the hosts in front as he shot straight at Richard Wright. Town's best moves centred around Alan Quinn and Garvan and it was the latter who produced a moment of real quality to put the visitors ahead in the 28th minute. Lisbie did brilliantly to win a header in the box and the ball fell kindly to Garvan who drilled the ball into the bottom corner on the half volley. Lisbie again was heavily involved in Town's second goal as he slid the ball to Garvan on the edge of the area and the midfielder struck his second with another superb shot. Just as the hosts looked to reduce the deficit early in the second half Lisbie got himself on the scoresheet with a simple knock-in after Norris' pass. Garvan went close to securing the match ball deep in the second half when his 25-yard free-kick was tipped over by Larrieu. Cathcart did pull one back for Plymouth 12 minutes before the end with a header from Craig Noone's cross while Norris' return to Home Park was soured as he was dismissed on the stroke of full time for a second bookable offence.
