Michael Carrick says he would consider playing for England again after explaining why he asked not to be included in Roy Hodgson's squad for Euro 2012.
The Manchester United midfielder enjoyed a positive end to the domestic season, but declined to be in contention for England duty in Poland and Ukraine.
After being an unused member of Fabio Capello's squad at the 2010 World Cup, Carrick did not want to be in the same position again after making his decision prior to the withdrawal of Frank Lampard and Gareth Barry due to injury.
However, he has not made a definitive decision on his international future and would be open to the prospect of playing for England again.
"I've had no contact from Roy Hodgson, so it would be wrong of me at this stage to make a decision either way," said Carrick. "But I would consider it, definitely."
Carrick admits he did not enjoy the experience in South Africa two years ago and concedes there was no appeal in being a bit-part player for England at another tournament.
"I didn't kick the door down and say: 'You've got to play me or I'll leave'," he said.
"It wasn't a case of that at all. It was more that if I wasn't going to play, I'd rather not go.
"During the World Cup I never featured and I was never really close to playing. That was a hard time.
"I just thought if it was going to be the same scenario again, I'd rather let someone else go in my place."
Carrick continued: "It's a game of opinions and Capello wanted to play a certain way.
"If that was the road he wanted to go down, it wasn't for me to argue with that. I just didn't play, that's all."
