Hassan eyes crucial clash

Ahmed Hassan is looking for Egypt's opening clash with Nigeria to set the tone for the tournament.

Egypt captain looking to set a precedent against Super Eagles

Ahmed Hassan has billed Egypt's opening clash with Nigeria as the tie to set the tone of the African Nations Cup. The veteran midfielder, who will be making his eighth AFCON appearance - a record he shares with Cameroon defender Rigobert Song - is eager to help the Pharaohs record a winning start in Angola. The defending champions will tackle the Super Eagles on January 12th, which is the biggest encounter in the opening round of fixtures. "Opening games are always very important," the Egypt skipper told Modern Sport late on Wednesday. "Our match against Nigeria will show how we will perform in the following matches, just like the 2008 tournament." Last time out in Ghana two years ago, Egypt routed Cameroon 4-2 in the opening game and went on to lift the AFCON crown. Hassan is aware that Nigeria boast a strong squad, but feels that his team-mates will be ready for the challenge. "Nigeria are a strong team, but we are now familiar with all African teams," he added. "I personally want to win a fourth African title with the national team."
