Shawky doubtful for Boro

Southgate bemoans injury problems

Middlesbrough manager Gareth Southgate has revealed that Mohamed Shawky is the most serious of several injury concerns following Saturday's 1-1 draw with Arsenal. The Egyptian midfielder was withdrawn at half-time on Saturday after suffering a stamp on the toe. He did not break a bone but may not be fit for the Premier League clash against bottom club Derby this weekend. A number of other players have also been forced to miss training in the early part of this week, with the medical department at Rockliffe Park taking the strain. Southgate told the club's official website on Tuesday: "Rockliffe is like Emergency Ward 10 at the minute.

Struggling

"It would be easier to name those who haven't got a knock. Shawky is the most doubtful of them in terms of Saturday's game. "We are training today and of those that played on Saturday we will only have Jeremie (Aliadiere), Tuncay, Schwarz (Mark Schwarzer) and maybe Stewey (Stewart Downing) with us. "All of the others will be doing individual training or recovering from knocks. "They have put themselves through the mill over the past week. Now we have to recover and ensure we are strong for Saturday." Afonso Alves has sat out Boro's last two games and it is unlikely that he will be able to feature against Derby as he continued to struggle with a hamstring injury.
