However, Breda could not keep AZ at bay until full-time as Belgian striker Moussa Dembele grabbed the crucial goal after 69 minutes.
The result lifts AZ 14 points clear at the top ahead of the rest of the weekend's action and extends their unbeaten streak to a staggering 28 games.
Breda remain seventh after suffering a third successive defeat and will need to get back on track quickly if they are to challenge for Europe.
