Chesterfield handed out a 5-1 thrashing to Burton Albion in their Johnstone's Paint Trophy first round clash at the Pirelli Stadium.
The Spireites counter-attacking style proved more than an overworked Burton defence could handle in both halves of a one-sided encounter.
The visitors went in front in the 16th minute when Wade Small celebrated his move from Charlton by speeding onto a flick by Drew Talbot before beating Artur Krysiak from 15 yards.
There was little the on-loan Polish keeper could do to prevent a second Chesterfield goal after being offered scant protection by his defence in the 38th minute as Drew Talbot burst onto a Jamie Lowry pass and crashed home a 15-yard shot.
Jack Lester spurned a chance to make it 3-0 as half-time approached and Burton made the most of the let off by reducing the deficit a minute after the break through midfielder's John McGrath's shot from the edge of the area.
But Chesterfield hit back to seal victory with three more goals. Small coolly lobbed his second of the night in the 62nd minute and Jamie Lowry forced home a close-range shot four minutes from the end, before Talbot rounded things off from distance in injury time to ruin Burton's debut in the competition.
